Steven Hyde

Lauridsen Ballet Centre

Steven began his dance training at Ballet Florida under the artistic direction of Marie Hale in 1980. In 1983, Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Artistic Director, Arnold Spohr, invited Steven to join the company. He quickly rose within the company and was named a principal dancer in 1987. In 1988, Hyde was invited by Evelyn Hart (Canada's prima ballerina to perform at the International Ballet Festival in Tokyo, Japan. In 1990, he received the attention of the international ballet world when he partnered Laura Graham at the 14th International Competition in Varna, Bulgaria. Although not an official competitor, Hyde was awarded the certificate for "Excellence in Partnering" by the judges, one of which was Natasha Makarova. Hyde danced with the American Ballet Theatre from 1993-96, performing many soloist and principal roles partnering Paloma Herrera, Amanda McKerrow, Julie Kent and Christina Fagundes. Steven worked with world-renowned choreographers such as Yuri Killian, Hans van Manen, James Kudelka, Twyla Tharp, Ben Stevenson, and Rudi van Dantzig. Steven had also worked with many guest artists and coaches including Fernando Bujones, Anthony Dowell, Merrill Ashley, Laura Alonzo and David Howard.

In January 2000, Hyde retired from dancing and joined the New England Ballet Company as ballet master/associate director. Additionally, he served on the faculty of the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School of American Ballet Theatre from 2003 - 2004. Hyde also instructed and choreographed for American Ballet Intensives from 2005-2006, Kaatsbaan's International Dance Centers Summer Intensive Program from 2004-2008, and American Ballet Theatre's Summer Intensive Program in Alabama from 2000-2003. In 2008 Steven was designated as an ABT Certified Teacher for ABT's National Curriculum in Primary through Level 3. Steven has guest taught at Cornell University, Ithaca College and Skidmore College. In 2006 Steven co-directed the Classical Contemporary Dance Conservatory at the Orange County High School of the Arts (OCHSA) with Colleen O'Callaghan another alumni of American Ballet Theatre. In 2007 Steven was appointed the Director of the Classical Contemporary Dance Department.
