Steve Lockwood
Pianist – Lauridsen Ballet Centre
Steve is a classically trained jazz musician. He finished his Conservatory training at the University of Missouri at Kansas City Conservatory studying under Walter Cook as a piano performance major in 1971. Steve has played for the Kansas City Jazz Festival, written music and taught for the N.E.A's Artist in the Schools Program, played major theatre venues in New York, (LaMama Repertory, BAM New Wave Series, and City Center) Europe, (La Biennale, Paris’ Autumn Festival, Amsterdam's Mickery Theatre) and Japan. Steve appears on recordings for ECM records: the award winning DOLMEN MUSIC (1981), (recording with “Oregon” percussionist, Colin Wolcott), TURTLE DREAMS (1983), and ATLAS: AN OPERA IN THREE ACTS (1993).
Steve first started playing Ballet classes for Diane Lauridsen at Lauridsen Ballet Centre in 1995. Since then, he has played in most of the professional dance studio's In Los Angeles as a ballet and modern dance accompanist. He was a staff accompanist In Ballet and Modern dance at California Institute of the Arts for 5 and 1/2 years. He also performed Samuel Barber’s “EXCURSIONS” for piano (Op. 20) with the San Pedro City Ballet at El Camino College in June of 2001. Steve recorded his “New Orleans Lowdown”, a 6 part dance suite for 8 piece jazz band. It is a dance/theater work taking place during the week of Hurricane Katrina and dedicated to New Orleans in the hope that it will retain its premier status as an American cultural icon. Steve played at the Regional Dance Festival at Cal State Long Beach in May of 2008, and is happy to be returning to the festival.
